She moved to Washington in the late 1930s to work for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. He is said to have persuaded her to attend law school. She married Fortas in 1935, while he was a member of the Yale law faculty and the legal staff of the Agriculture Department. She received a master's degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin and graduated second in her class from Yale Law School. Agger was a native of New York and a graduate of Barnard College. Her clients included the Blaustein family, which has oil and other business interests, and the Maidenform women's garments company. She was a tiny dynamo of a woman who smoked cigars, championed rights for women and worked long hours well into her 70s. Agger headed the tax practice group at Arnold & Porter, one of Washington's most prestigious law firms, for about 20 years. She was the widow of former Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas.
