The real answers may be lost to history, but there are a few theories. What was wrong with King George III? What caused his mental illness, or his "madness" as is was called? Even the royal family's official website writes, "George III is widely remembered for two things: losing the American colonies and going mad. In the last decade of his reign, he was deemed mentally unfit to rule, and his eldest son, Prince George Augustus Frederick was Prince Regent-marking the start of the "Regency" era. George ascended to the throne at age 22, and was King of Great Britain until his death in 1820 at age 81. ![]() Though Queen Charlotte is fictional, the real King George III did likely suffer from mental illness. The entirety of episode four, "Holding the King," focuses on the events of the first three episodes from George's perspective, and the inability of royal doctors to treat him.
