Bryson travels throughout the country, visiting all of its major cities and comparing and contrasting them. The leader of a very well-known country just disappeared, and very few people have heard of the story. To further illustrate his point, he tells the story of an Australian prime minister who simply vanished in the ocean. He includes statistics about the rarity of Australia appearing in American news sources. These are in addition to the more mundane ways that a person can die in other places.īryson also stresses how little most people know about Australia. In the outback, there are the high temperatures, lack of water, and distance from everything. In the ocean, there are strong rip currents along with saltwater crocodiles. For example, several of the deadliest species of snakes in the world live on the continent. I have wanted to visit Australia for some time, so I was intrigued when I picked up the book, and became further hooked as I began reading.īryson begins his narrative by describing some of the many ways you can die in Australia. In a Sunburned Country describes Bill Bryson’s journey through all parts of Australia.

Then we hit Chapter Two and find out that Stephanie's isn't the only point of view in the book. Stephanie's parents try to keep her occupied by giving her glider lessons, and her mother challenges her to solve a mystery: who or what has been stealing small amounts of celery from the colonists' experimental farms and greenhouses? After all, the planet is home to some very dangerous species, most notably the hexapuma, an oversized puma-like predator. An aspiring zoologist/botanist and forest ranger, Stephanie is excited until she is told that she cannot explore the forests around her new home without adult supervision. Twelve-year-old Stephanie's parents have moved the family to a colony planet named Sphinx in the Star Kingdom of Manticore. Now the author joins the ranks of adult writers crossing over into the hot YA market with a prequel novel about an ancestor of Honor Harrington named Stephanie. I've read most of the books, and while they can get bogged down in lengthy descriptive, technological, or political passages, I really like Weber's space opera heroine. If you are a fan of adult sci-fi, you may be familiar with David Weber's Honor Harrington series. Two brothers along with father, mother and little sister move to the river and have a series of exciting adventures. The book itself is a solid read about the days when the Ohio valley was 'The West'. To add to the confusion, there was an earlier three volume Pioneer Boys Series from the Syndicate with the pen name of Ralph Bonehill which was one of the main names which Edward Stratemeyer himself wrote under. The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew are the most famous works of this syndicate today. This book was written for Edward Stratemeyer's syndicate which published thousands of books by various authors under house pen names. George Rathborne who wrote under various names. This book was published in 1912 and is the first of a seven volume The Pioneer Boys Series written by Harrison Adams who was really St. There is also a compilation volume with this book and its sequel that goes under the same name. It is often mixed up with On the Trail of Pontiac or, The Pioneer Boys of the Ohio which is a 1904 book from The Colonial Series by Edward Stratemeyer. There is no small amount of confusion about this book. "You Were Made For This is a thrilling literary fairytale from which you can't escape, not even after you've found your way back to the light of day. But Frank, of all people, knows that the truth is rarely what you want the world to see. Treacherous things, which are almost impossible to believe when looking at this perfect family. And that's why Frank soon sees the things others might miss. All their lives, Frank and Merry have been more like sisters than best friends. She befriends the neighbors, and even finds herself embracing the domesticity she's always seemed to scorn. When Merry's childhood friend Frank visits their Swedish paradise, she immediately becomes part of the family. Sometimes they can hardly believe how lucky they are. Sam, formerly an academic, is pursuing a new career as a filmmaker. Merry adores the domestic life: baking, gardening, caring for her infant son. Merry, Sam, and Conor are the perfect family in the perfect place. Doting wife, devoted husband, cherished child. Book Synopsis A gripping page-turner for fans of The Woman in the Window and The Perfect Nanny, Michelle Sacks's You Were Made For This provocatively explores the darkest sides of marriage, motherhood, and friendship. His ending, for instance, seemed to leave ample room for a sequel that never came. The creature was barely in the book, and a lot of aspects of him went utterly unexplained. Nevertheless, this book didn't evoke the beautiful claustrophobia that, say, did. I give the book credit for showing how frightening trekking through the tundra can be - the fall into the crevasse is a very real worry and the smothering snow is likewise terrifying. Naturally, in Alaska, they soon discover that snow can be a pretty frightening thing. The kids are excited to go, as living in California they've never seen snow. As far as framing plots go for Goosebumps books, this is pretty typical. The book features two kids and their dad trekking up to Alaska, as their dad has been tasked with finding and photographing the Abominable Snowman. Unfortunately, though, this book is likely an iconic Goosebumps title for other reasons. Much like the Animorph morph covers, they are emblazoned in every 90s and early 2000s kids memory likely as not. I'd like to say it's because of the artwork, but all the Goosebumps artwork is pretty iconic and fun. The creature was prominently featured in the trailer, and the title gets touted around. This is one of those Goosebumps books that you see rather often. Natsume is one of those friends who tries to get Mizutani to tutor. I know she acted annoyed at time but she's learning to get her head stuck out of book once in a while. Mizutani friendship circle grows throughout the book which I loved seeing. real perhaps? It's just sweet seeing them both together. She does get a little flustered by Haru which makes her feel more. She has a great sense of confidence in that regard. I couldn't believe she had such a non-caring attitude towards others and what they may have thought of her. In romance mangas that usually seems to be what I come across so I liked that Mizutani kept her harsh, honest attitude along with her compassion towards Haru. I enjoyed reading about a female main character in a manga who didn't act childish. She slowly learns to become friendlier and more open however, she keeps her brashness and need to study within her personality always. There are small moments where she is struck by how Haru is treated and defends him. She doesn't have time for anyone else's problems. Mizutani's goal in life is to get good grades. And she just happens to have a seriously feisty, extra-hot best friend on the rebound. His best friend and teammate has recently given up the puck bunnies and traded them in for a real girlfriend. And who better to try it with than her best friends boyfriends best friend? What could possibly go wrong? NHL player, Randy Ballistic, lives up to his last name on the ice and in the bedroom. Book Synopsis ***A standalone novel in The Pucked Series*** Lily LeBlanc isnt versed in the art of casual sex, but after seven years in an on-again, off-again relationship, shes definitely willing to give it a shot. About the Book Fans of Christina Lauren and Alice Clayton will love this story about a hockey player and figure skater who try casual sex resulting in sparks flying and ice melting leaving them both wondering which one of them will be PUCKED OVER. Partnered with the demon princess of Hell Angelique ( Valentina Vargas), Pinhead seeks to open an eternal portal from Hell to Earth in order to conquer it and kill any obstacles in the way. Freed from his human side by some form of Soul Pillar sorcery in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Pinhead begins to gorge on victims to escape his rectangular prison, leading to a nightclub rampage where he indiscriminately massacres the club’s customers and turns a number of them into Cenobites.Įven after merging with his human aspect again, Pinhead’s behavior changes little in Hellraiser: Bloodline, which inexplicably takes the Hellraiser setting into the future and into space (beating Jason X to the punch by five years). Having been reverted to his original human form Elliott Spencer, Pinhead was killed in combat and trapped within a McGuffin known as the “Pillar of Souls,” giving director Anthony Hickox ( Waxwork) and writers Peter Atkins and Tony Randel (who also directed Hellraiser II) free license to play with Pinhead’s character. With Clive Barker’s involvement in the rearview mirror after Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), Pinhead’s character took a menacing turn.
